These smoked salmon pinwheels are a fancy take on traditional versions like my ham and cheese pinwheels. Inspired by smoked salmon bagels, these pinwheels feature tangy cream cheese, savory smoked salmon, and crisp cucumbers layered over soft tortilla strips. They are quick and easy to make, and the perfect appetizer, snack, or light lunch.

Using smoked salmon is one of my favorite ways to create elegant recipes like my smoked salmon roulade, and smoked salmon dip bites. With zero cooking required, these pinwheels are a foolproof option that’s perfect for every occasion.

Serving Suggestion

I love to serve them for holiday parties and family gatherings. However, they’re also great for a light meal, especially on hot days.

Mix and match the fillings to switch up the flavor and make the pinwheels your own. No matter how you prepare these bites, you really can’t go wrong!

Smoked Salmon Pinwheels Ingredients

Please be sure to scroll down to the recipe card below for the complete details!

  • Tortillas: I use plain white flour tortillas (about 10 inches).
  • Cream cheese: I like plain and full-fat. Use what you prefer.
  • Smoked salmon: Cut into strips as wide as your tortilla strips.
  • Cucumber: English or Persian cucumber.
  • Lemon juice: For bright, fresh flavor.
  • Seasoning: Sea salt and black pepper to taste.

How to Make Smoked Salmon Pinwheels

  1. Prepare the tortilla ribbons: Slice the tortilla into strips. Make an incision halfway through in the top-left and bottom-right sections.
  2. Prepare the pinwheels: Spread cream cheese onto the second tortilla. Trim into strips. Cut the smoked salmon into strips and peel the cucumber with a veggie peeler.
  3. Toppings: Top each section with smoked salmon and cucumber strips (trim if necessary). Sprinkle with lemon juice and season well.
  4. Roll up the pinwheels. Arrange them inside the tortilla ribbons. Top with dill sprigs and serve.

Possible Variations

There are so many ways to customize these pinwheels to what you like and what you have at home. Here are some options, but feel free to experiment:

  • Tortillas: Swap for whole-wheat or corn tortillas, or try puff pastry or crescent dough.
  • Smoked salmon: Tuna, ham, turkey, sausage, bacon, pepperoni, salami, ground beef, or shredded chicken.
  • Cucumber: Try spinach, arugula, or chopped fresh herbs.
  • Cream cheese: Garlic cream cheese, Boursin, mayo, guacamole, hummus, pesto, olive tapenade, cheddar, Swiss cheese, or crumbled feta.
  • Add-ins: Caramelized onions, spinach, broccoli, chili flakes, capers, Dijon mustard, or lemon zest.

How to Store Leftovers

Keep leftover pinwheels in an airtight container in the fridge.

FAQs

How long will the pinwheels last?

They are best on the same day, as the cucumber will get soggy.

Why tuck the roll-ups into the tortilla ribbons?

The ribbon holds the roll-ups together and allows for mess-free eating.
