This charming Christmas Butter Board with a cute whipped butter snowman is surprisingly easy and sure to make everyone smile.

Savory, tangy, and slightly salty, it’s the perfect addition to any holiday spread, providing a nice contrast to the abundance of sweet treats that surround the holiday.

This butter board has become a holiday season staple in my home. All my friends and family request it for every gathering, along with my Nutella Christmas tree, Christmas grazing platter, and Chocolate Christmas lights.
Recipe Tip
If you are making the snowman ahead of time, put it in the fridge, and take it out at least 30 minutes before serving.
I like to keep it simple, letting the flavors of the yogurt shine through, but it’s easy to customize with different herbs, cranberries, or even compound butters. No matter how you prepare it, this snack board is guaranteed to disappear fast!
Christmas Butter Ingredients
- Butter: I use salted butter. Unsalted butter is fine, too.
- Greek yogurt: Adds tang and flavor.
- Sea salt: I use flaky sea salt to taste.
- Snowman details: You’ll need a carrot for the nose, basil for the scarf, feet, and gloves, and peppercorns for the eyes, mouth, and buttons.
- Baguette: I use a French baguette and fry the slices in butter until golden on both sides (to get them extra crispy).
How to Make a Christmas Butter Board
- Make the whipped butter: Whisk the butter for a few minutes, add the yogurt, and sea salt. Whisk again until fluffy.
- Shape the snowman: Form the whipped butter into balls. Place them on your serving platter and flatten them slightly.
- Add the final details: Top with a carrot nose, and add the peppercorn and basil details.
Possible Variations
- Greek yogurt: Swap for sour cream, creme fraiche, whipping cream, buttermilk, kefir, or even cream cheese.
- Baguette: Serve with crackers, pita bread chips, sourdough toast, fluffy rolls, or even radishes.
- Add-ins: Try crushed garlic, blue cheese, cranberries, caramelized onion, grated horseradish, chopped cranberries, fresh pepper, chili, parsley, thyme, or chives.
How to Store Leftovers
Keep them in an airtight container in the fridge and enjoy within 3 days.
FAQs
Yes, you can shape it one day in advance and store it covered with plastic wrap in the fridge. Wait to add the details until you are close to serving. Take it out of the fridge 30 minutes before serving for that creamy consistency.
It may help to wet your hands before you shape the snowman. If that doesn’t work, place the whipped butter in the fridge for 20-30 minutes.
