 Puff pastry: You'll need a rectangular sheet of puff pastry. You can thaw it from frozen or find it in the fridge section of your supermarket.

• Ham: Use your favorite ham, and feel free to add a double layer for an extra meaty bite.

• Cheese: I love using a block of red cheddar and grating it myself. 

• Mustard: Pairs so well with ham and cheese. You can use any kind you like, whether you prefer English, grain, or yellow mustard.

• Butter and garlic: Making garlic butter couldn't be simpler. Melt the butter and add minced garlic. Adds so much flavor.

• Fresh basil: Use for a pop of color and garnish.

How to Make Pinwheels with Ham and Cheese

1. Assemble the pinwheels. Roll out the puff pastry, top with mustard, ham, and grated cheese.

2. Bake. They will need 15 minutes at 200°C / 392°F until golden and flaky.

3. Make the garlic butter. Melt the butter in a small pot, and add a clove of minced garlic.

4. Add the finishing touches. Remove the pinwheels from the oven after 15 minutes, brush them with garlic butter, and bake them again for two more minutes. Serve.

Possible Variations:

Mustard: Try cream cheese, pesto, or herbed butter for a different taste, or mix and match.

• Puff pastry: Tortilla, pizza dough, or crescent dough are great alternatives.

• Cheese: I use grated cheddar, but use any cheese that melts well, such as mozzarella, brie, Gouda, Emmental, or Parmesan.

• Ham: Try salami, mortadella, roast chicken. bacon, turkey, or pepperoni.

Yes, you can make them in advance. Roll and slice them, then place them covered on a plate in the fridge. If you'd like to serve them warm, bake them 30-60 minutes before your guests arrive.

You can freeze the pinwheels after baking when they come to room temperature. Then, store them in an airtight container. Reheat them at 200°C / 392°F until they are heated through.

Makes 14 pinwheels.

1. Turn on your oven to 200°C / 392°F.

2. Roll out the puff pastry sheet and spread the mustard on top.

3. Now add the ham and grated cheese.

4. Roll up the puff pastry and filling tightly, and pinch the ends to seal them.

5. Slice the roll into pinwheels. Place them on a lined baking sheet.

6. Melt the butter in a small pot on low heat, and add the minced garlic. Heat through for two minutes until fragrant.

7. Bake the pinwheels in the hot oven until bubbly and golden (about 15 minutes). Remove them from the oven.

8. Brush the garlic butter on top of the hot roll ups.

9. Bake them again for two minutes.

10. Serve.
