- Eggs: Small eggs so they don’t overflow.
- Butter: Salted or unsalted.
- Toast: I use two slices of large, plain white toast.
- Seasoning: Sea salt and pepper. Season after cooking.

How to Make Egg in a Hole
- Prepare the toast: Spread half the butter on both sides of the bread. Cut out a hole in the center.
- Fry the slice of bread in the remaining butter over medium-high heat. When the toast is golden brown, turn it over.
- Crack the egg into the center of the toast. Fry until the toast is light golden brown, then turn down to medium-low heat until the egg is cooked through.
- Arrange the toast and cutouts onto a plate. Top with chopped thyme and serve.

Recipe Tip
Cover the pan with a lid if you prefer the yolk more set, or turn the toast over and fry it on both sides.
Tips for Success
- Fry the toast on one side first, then turn it over, and crack open the egg into the center for that beautiful, golden yolk.
- Add more butter to the hot pan if the toast looks dry and isn’t turning golden brown.
- Be sure to fry the round cutouts too.
Possible Variations
- Toast: Or sourdough, ciabatta, rye bread, whole-wheat toast, etc.
- Add-ins: Sprinkle with chili flakes, minced garlic, Parmesan cheese, hot honey, pesto, feta, or mashed avocado, or red pepper flakes.
- Fresh herbs: Chives, parsley, or green onions.
Best Served With
