Ghost Toast with fresh mozzarella and tomato hearts is an easy Halloween recipe and perfect to serve at spooky parties.

Panfry the bread for a buttery crunch that pairs so well with the soft cheese, and season well for a festive caprese everyone will love.
Mix it up by making different expressions, and be sure to add mozzarella hands and cherry tomato hearts for extra cuteness.

Recipe Tip
Rub a garlic clove on the crispy bread for even more flavor!
Ghost Toast Ingredients
Please be sure to scroll down to the recipe card below for the complete details!

- Baguette: Use fresh or panfry them on medium heat until golden on both sides.
- Butter: To get those slices of bread crispy and buttery (not pictured).
- Mozzarella: You want to use firm and fresh mozzarella balls that can be sliced.
- Grape tomatoes: These have the oblong shape we need to make the hearts.
- Fig: For the mouth. Slice the remaining fig and add it underneath the mozzarella ghosts for a sweet contrast to the creamy cheese.
- Basil: For that burst of fresh caprese flavor.
- Season: Sprinkle with sea salt and pepper to taste (not pictured).
How to Make Ghost Toast

- Prepare the ingredients: Panfry the baguette slices and cut out the mozzarella ghosts.

- Prepare the tomato hearts: Slice the tomatoes at an angle. Halve each side through the middle, and match up the opposite sides to make the hearts (see below for more detail).

- Prepare the arms and mouth: Cut out mozzarella discs and halve these to make arms. Shape the mouths using fig peel and a large straw.

- Assemble the ghosts: Top baguette slices with fresh basil, fig slices, mozzarella ghosts, tomato hearts, fig mouth, mozzarella arms, and candy eyes. Season well and serve.
How to Make Tomato Heartsโค๏ธ

- Slice a grape tomato at a slant.

- Halve one half symmetrically.

- Halve the other half.

- Turn the halves to face each other making a heart shape.

- Repeat with the other side.

- And voila, you have tomato hearts!
Tips for Success
- Keep an eye on the baguette when panfrying. They can quickly turn from golden to burnt.
- Do add extra butter if the pan is looking dry after flipping the baguette slices over.
- Dry the mozzarella ghosts on a paper towel to get rid of some of the moisture.
Serving Suggestion
Skip the tomato hearts and shape a mini ghost on top for a mother and baby ghost toast duo.
Possible Variations
- Baguette: Slices of sourdough, toast, crackers, puff pastry, etc.
- Mozzarella: Swap for cheddar, Swiss cheese, burrata, or a goat cheese log.
- Grape tomatoes: Oblong olives can be heart shaped too.
- Fig and candy eyes: Peppercorns, capers, black sesame seeds, or black olive peel.
- Presentation: There are so many ways to make these. Hereโs another version I made with olive eyes and mouth.

How to Store Leftovers
Keep leftover ghost toast in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Enjoy them within 1 day.
