Prep Time: 25 min.
Parmesan chips with onion are crispy, cheesy bites with a classic onion ring flavor, but minus the fuss. They are my go-to whenever I need a tasty snack or appetizer.
The healthy onion ring chips are made in a muffin tin, resulting in perfectly shaped chips ideal for scooping. I serve them with a creamy Greek yogurt, dill, and garlic dip, which comes together in minutes.
Similar to my homemade crackers, these are also glutenfree and low carb. Enjoy them on their own, as part of a cheeseboard, or top them with smoked salmon, crème fraîche, capers, and chives for a crowd-pleasing canapé.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Please be sure to scroll down to the recipe card below for the complete details!
• Parmesan - I like to buy a good-quality cheese that I can grate myself.
• White onion - Use a medium-sized onion, so that it will fit in the muffin tin, or swap with a red onion.
• Feta - I prefer to use a block of feta for extra creaminess.
• Seasoning - I season these chips with onion powder and sea salt for extra taste.
• Greek yogurt - A 10% full-fat Greek yogurt is perfect for dips, but feel free to use any kind you like, or substitute with crème fraîche or sour cream.
• Fresh dill - Fresh dill will pack the most flavor, but if you don’t have that, dried dill is fine too.
• Garlic - Use a small garlic clove if you don’t want too much garlic or omit.
How to Make Parmesan Chips with Onion
1. Prepare the ingredients. Grate the Parmesan, crumble the feta, and slice the onion.
2. Assemble the chips. Grease the pan. Top each muffin tin cavity with grated Parmesan, crumbled feta, and the onion slices. Brush the onion with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt and onion powder.
3. Make the dip. Mix Greek yogurt, fresh dill, minced garlic, onion powder, and add sea salt and pepper to taste.
4. Bake in a 200°C (400°F) oven for 12-13 minutes until golden brown.
Possible Variations
• Dip - Try guacamole, ranch, salsa, tzatziki. You can use any dip you like that pairs well with cheese.
• Toppings - Add pepperoni, tomato sauce, ham, fresh chili, or jalapenõs.
• Cheese - Substitute Parmesan for cheddar, Gouda, or any other hard cheese that melts well.
• Seasoning - Add dried oregano, thyme, rosemary, paprika, chili flakes, or garlic powder.
• Onion - Instead of onion, you can top the Parmesan chips with sliced garlic, red onion, shallots, or even chopped green onions.
• Muffin tin - Skip the tin and make the chips on a baking sheet.
FAQs
Can I make onion chips ahead of time?
These chips are best enjoyed warm, but you can prepare them a few hours in advance and wait to bake them. Or serve them cold, they’ll still be delicious.
My chips weren’t crispy. What did I do wrong?
It’s possible you stacked too much cheese, and it might need more oven time. Also, be sure not to stack or cover them as they are cooling down.
What are other ways to serve the crunchy onion chips?
Serve them as part of a cheese board or top them with smoked salmon, cream cheese, and fresh dill to make canapés.
