With a sweet honey lime dressing, each bite of this colorful platter brings a taste of the tropics to any gathering.

With vibrant, bite-sized balls of fruit, this fruit salad looks impressive but is quick and easy to make thanks to the use of a melon baller. You can even mix and match different fruits like pineapple, papaya, or bananas for extra sweetness.

Served on a platter or in a large bowl, this fruit salad is the perfect addition to potlucks alongside other crowd favorites like my summer burrata salad and tomato caprese salad but also makes for a refreshing afternoon snack on hot summer days.

Serving Suggestion

For another fun way to serve melon balls, slide them onto skewers with basil or add them to drinks and punch bowls.

Tropical Fruit Salad Ingredients

Please be sure to scroll down to the recipe card below for the complete details.

  • Cantaloupe and green grapes: Choose firm and unbruised fruit.
  • Watermelon: A seedless melon is best for this recipe.
  • Dragonfruit and mango: Make sure the fruit is firm with a slight give.
  • Kiwi: Choose firm kiwis. Halve them in the middle and scoop the balls out from each half.

How to Make a Tropical Fruit Salad

  1. Prepare the fruit: Use the melon baller to cut out the various fruit balls.
  2. Make the dressing: Mix lime juice with honey.
  3. Assemble: Arrange the fruit balls on a platter. Top with the dressing. Serve.

Possible Variations

  • Fruit: Swap for pink dragonfruit, blueberries, red grapes, banana, pomegranate arils, Honeydew, strawberries, papaya, lycées, star fruit, or anything you have to hand.
  • Dressing: Or orange juice, vanilla paste, pineapple juice, lime or orange zest, passionfruit, or poppy seeds.
  • Add-ins: Add chopped fresh mint or lemon balm, sprinkle with tajin or a tiny bit of sea salt.
  • Presentation: Garnish with edible flowers or arrange the melon balls randomly, which will give the platter an entirely different look:

How to Store Leftovers

Keep in an airtight container in the fridge and enjoy within 1 day. You can also freeze the fruit and save for juices and smoothies.

FAQs

Can I make the salad in advance?

Yes! You can make it a few hours ahead. Pat dry all the fruit with a paper towel, cover with plastic wrap, and store in the fridge. Dress the salad right before serving.

What do I do with all the odd shaped leftover pieces of fruit?

Save these bits in a freezer bag to use in your next smoothie, or chop them up and make a mini fruit salad.
