Crisp toasted bread is slathered with tangy cream cheese and topped with creamy avocado “sardines.” It’s an easy recipe perfect for themed birthday or dinner parties!

I love ripe avocados and keep them on hand to use in a variety of recipes like my squirrel-shaped avocado snacks, shrimp and avocado salad, and tricolore salad with avocado cream. However, this cream cheese avocado toast is one of my favorites and so fun for kids.

Serving Suggestion

To make a fun appetizer for kids and adults alike, ditch the toast and use crostini. Top each crostini with cream cheese and one avocado fish for a flavorful bite.

Avocado Toast Ingredients

  • Toast: I use sourdough and toast it for a bit of crunch and texture.
  • Avocado: I prefer Hass avocados for this recipe, but any firm and ripe avocado will do.
  • Cream cheese: Plain, full fat cream cheese.
  • Lemon juice: Adds tang and helps keep the avocado from browning.
  • Sea salt: To season.
  • Nori: Optional: Add a seaweed trim to make the fish pop. You can definitely omit this part, as it is laborious.

How to Make Avocado Cream Cheese Toast

  1. Peel and slice the avocado, and cut out the fish with the cookie cutter.
  2. Top the toast with cream cheese.
  3. Arrange the fish on top and trim the nori along the edges of each fish.
  4. Final details: Drizzle with lemon juice and flaky sea salt (and black pepper), then add the candy eyes.

Recipe Tip

Leave out the seaweed trim if you want to save time (it takes about 40 minutes).

Possible Variations

  • Toast: Swap for sourdough, whole wheat bread, crostini, rye bread, brioche, etc.
  • Cream cheese: Use any plain or flavored cream cheese, or try cottage cheese, goat cheese, hummus, whipped feta, burrata, pesto, or even butter.
  • Avocado: Mozzarella, tomato, ham, cheddar cheese, mango, or anything similar that can be shaped into fish.
  • Add-ons: Drizzle the cream cheese layer with balsamic glaze, chili, bagel seasoning, or hot honey before topping with the avocado. You can even add smoked salmon, pickled red onions, cherry tomatoes, or radishes.
  • Presentation: If you don’t have a fish cutter, try shaping an avocado rose instead. Or simply smash the avocado for a simpler meal.

FAQs

How do I prevent the avocado from browning?

Squeeze lemon or lime juice on top.

I don’t want to use candy eyes. Can I make eyes that aren’t sugar-based?

Yes, sesame seeds or chia seeds will work for the pupils. Use mozzarella or cheddar (cut out with a metal straw) to shape the white part of the eyes.

Do I need to add the nori trim?

No, not at all. It will still look like avocado fish, plus it will save you lots of time.
