All you need is about 15 minutes, a straw, and a sharp knife. The steps are simple and foolproof! You can even switch up the flavors or experiment with different designs to make the recipe your own.

A round platter with cherry tomato appetizers stuffed and topped with mozzarella and cucumber, surrounded by star-shaped string lights.

Enjoy the bites as they are, or pair them with artisan crackersham & cheese roll-ups, and avocado bites for an impressive spread. They’re also a fun afternoon snack, especially in summer when sweet tomatoes are at their peak. Set out a platter for guests, and watch them disappear.

Cherry Tomato Appetizer Ingredients

Please be sure to scroll down to the recipe card below for the complete details!

  • Bocconcini: Mini mozzarella balls. Slice them in half and tuck the curved part into the carved-out tomatoes.
  • Cherry tomatoes: Make sure they are firm and the right size to fit the halved bocconcini.
  • Cucumber: You only need a small piece of the peel to make the tuxedo details.
  • Fig jam: I like green fig jam, but any fig jam will do.
  • To serve: Olive oil, sea salt, and black pepper.

How to Make Cherry Tomato Appetizers

  1. Prepare the ingredients: Halve the tomatoes and spoon out the flesh. Halve the bocconcini, too.
  2. Top the tomatoes with fig jam and the halved bocconcini.
  3. Cut out the cucumber peel details and arrange on top of the appetizers.
  4. Drizzle the bites with olive oil and season with a pinch of sea salt and pepper.

Possible Variations

  • Bocconcini: Try goat cheese, burrata, blue cheese, ricotta, or whipped feta.
  • Cherry tomatoes: Grape tomatoes, peaches, apricots, mini peppers, figs, mini toasts, or croustades.
  • Fig jam: Swap for pesto, cream cheese, balsamic glaze, caramelized onion chutney, or your favorite dip.
  • Cucumber: Shape the details out of fresh herbs such as basil or mint.

How to Store Leftovers

Keep leftover appetizers in an airtight container in the fridge and enjoy within 1 day.

FAQs

Can I make the appetizers in advance?

Yes, you can prepare them a few hours ahead. Store them covered in the fridge. Wait to season and drizzle with olive oil until serving.

I don’t have a metal straw. How do I cut out the cucumber buttons?

Cut it by hand. You can make squares too if that’s easier.
