Strawberry Ladybugs Ingredients

  • Strawberries: Look for similar sized, firm, bright red berries with a pointy shape.
  • Dark chocolate: Use a good-quality baking chocolate with 55-70% cocoa solids (or your favorite chocolate chips if you’re in a pinch).
  • Oreos: Use regular Oreos or similar chocolate biscuits.
  • Candy eyes: Available in large supermarkets and baking shops. Use regular or mini-sized.
  • Fresh basil: Or mint. You can omit.

How to Make Strawberry Ladybugs

  1. Prepare the ingredients: Halve the strawberries. Dry them on a paper towel. Melt the chocolate. Pour it in a bowl.
  2. Make the ladybugs: Dip the strawberry tips into the chocolate. Add candy eyes. Pour the chocolate into a piping utensil (or freezer bag with the corner snipped). Pipe the chocolate details and allow to set.
  3. Top the Oreos with chocolate, add the ladybugs and a fresh basil leaf. Allow to set. Serve.

Possible Variations

  • Strawberries: Swap for small red apples or plums.
  • Dark chocolate: Milk chocolate is a great alternative.
  • Oreos: Swap for any round biscuits you prefer. You can omit the biscuits, too.
  • Candy eyes: Make your own using white chocolate and sprinkles or use small chocolate balls. You can also omit eyes, they will still be cute.

FAQs

What is the best way to melt dark chocolate?

I always melt chocolate in a small pan over low heat, but you have to stir constantly to prevent it from burning. You can also use a double boiler or microwave.

How do I get the chocolate to stick?

Be sure to dry the strawberries with a paper towel to keep the surface as dry as possible.

How long will it take for the chocolate to set?

Depending on the temperature in your kitchen, it will take about 15-30 minutes. You can transfer the ladybugs to the fridge or freezer if you are in a rush and want to speed up the process.

What’s the best way to serve the ladybugs at a party?

A fun way would be arrange arugula on a platter and place the chocolate ladybugs on top. You can also enjoy them as part of a dessert tray with my chocolate butterflies and strawberry bunnies.
