These crispy Homemade Breadsticks are surprisingly easy to make from scratch and taste even better than store-bought.

Breadsticks (also known as grissini) are delicious snacks for all ages and make a tasty addition to charcuterie boards with your favorite cheeses, cured meats, and spreads.

They also make a great appetizer for your next dinner party. Serve the sticks with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, olive tapenade, or hummus.

Homemade Breadsticks Ingredients
Please be sure to scroll down to the recipe card below for the complete details!
- Plain flour: There’s no need to sieve it. Bread flour is fine, too.
- Butter: I use melted salted butter.
- Water: It needs to be lukewarm to activate the yeast.
- Yeast: Dry active yeast or fresh.
- Olive oil: Add to the dough to get the breadsticks crispy, and brush it on the pre-baked breadsticks.
- Sea salt: I use Maldon flaky sea salt.
- Sesame seeds: White, black, or both.

How to Make Homemade Breadsticks
- Make the breadsticks: Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl. Knead until the dough is soft. Let it rise for 1 hour.
- Shape them: Halve the dough, then halve it again, and keep halving until you have 24 similar-sized pieces. Roll each piece into long, thin logs. Brush with olive oil. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
- Arrange the breadsticks: Place the breadsticks spaced out on a baking tray. You may need to bake in two sets, or use two baking trays.
- Bake for 22-24 minutes until golden and crispy.
Possible Variations
- Plain flour: You can use bread flour instead, or mix n-match.
- Toppings: Sprinkle black or white sesame seeds, nigella seeds, herbs, chia seeds, etc. You can even brush the breadsticks with garlic butter before or after they bake.
- Add ins: Add Parmesan or other grated cheeses, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, finely chopped olives, or sundried tomatoes to the dough.
How to Store Leftovers
Keep them stored in a large airtight container on your kitchen counter.
FAQs
If you remove the breadsticks from the oven too soon, they won’t get that crunch. Try to bake them longer.
Try a bowl of your favorite extra virgin olive oil and a balsamic vinegar. Serve them with soups or stews, and they even pair well with any dip you like. Try my caramelized onion dip or guacamole dip flower.
