The classic combination of juicy tomato, fresh mozzarella, and basil is always a winner, but this simple version is made all the more special with the heart-shaped ingredients.

These easy Caprese skewers are perfect for dinner parties and would even make a romantic starter for Valentine’s Day.

Skewers with heart-shaped mozzarella, yellow and orange cherry tomatoes, and basil leaves with more basil leaves and a blue tea towel nearby.

I found the adorable heart-shaped mozzarella balls at our local supermarket. If you can’t find similar, just use regular bocconcini. You can also stick two bocconcini halves together back to back at an angle so they resemble hearts.

Ingredients

  • 10 bocconcini, heart-shaped or regular
  • 10 grape tomatoes, yellow
  • 10 grape tomatoes, orange
  • 20 fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic glaze
  • sea salt, to taste

Instructions

  • Halve the oblong yellow and orange grape tomatoes at a slant in the center.
  • Rotate the right half so the two halves resemble a heart.
  • Assemble the skewers with a yellow grape tomato heart, a folded basil leaf, a bocconcini heart (or a regular bocconcini), another folded basil leaf, and an orange grape tomato heart. You can make different versions, as I have done.
  • Arrange the skewers on a platter.
  • Drizzle with your favorite extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, and balsamic glaze.
  • Serve.

Notes

I used an assortment of grape tomatoes and cherry tomatoes to make all the skewers slightly different. Stick to grape tomatoes if you want to make everything heart-shaped, or mix and match like I did.
