Made with strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, mango, Galia, blueberry raindrops, and honeydew pieces to form the clouds at the end of the rainbow. There really is something for everyone!

You’ll need a melon baller to get those uniform spheres. If you don’t have one, just chop the fruit into similar-sized pieces.

Recipe Tip

Make the mouth on the clouds with a tiny bit of blueberry skin or use curved sprinkles.

Fruit Rainbow Ingredients

  • Honeydew melon: You want a melon without blemishes or bruises with a slight sweet aroma. Ideally, slightly white-fleshed, as this is for the clouds.
  • Blueberries: Go for bright, dark-blue, fresh berries.
  • Galia melon: Yellow-tinted skin and green-fleshed inside.
  • Mango: Choose a firm fruit with slight give and a sweet smell at the stem.
  • Cantaloupe: Find a firm, heavy fruit for its size.
  • Watermelon: Seedless and sweet.
  • Strawberries: Look for firm, plump berries that are bright red.
  • Candy eyes: They will bring the platter to life and make it extra fun. They’re available in large supermarkets, baking shops, and online.

How to Make a Rainbow Fruit Tray

  1. Prepare the fruit: Wash and slice all the fresh fruit. Use similar sized strawberries. Slice the watermelon, cantaloupe, mango, and Galia. Cut out the fruit with a melon baller. Slice the honeydew and cut out the ovals with the oval cookie cutter.
  2. Assemble the rainbow: Use a large chopping board or platter, and plate the fruit in the color-coordinated sections.
  3. Final touches: Top the clouds with candy eyes, and a blueberry skin smiley.

Possible Variations

You can use a variety of fresh fruits for this platter, just be sure to include examples from several of these color segments and place them in this order:

  • Purple: Purple grapes, plums, figs, black currants, cherries.
  • Black: Blackberries.
  • Blue: Blueberries.
  • Green: Grapes, kiwi, gooseberries, plums, key limes, pear, Galia, honeydew.
  • Yellow: Pineapple, mango, banana, starfruit, apple, yellow cherries, passionfruit.
  • Orange: Oranges, physalis, cantaloupe, peaches, papaya, abricots, kumquats.
  • Red: Strawberries, watermelon, raspberries, pomegranate, apples, cherries, wild strawberries.
  • Dip: Serve the platter with a melted chocolate, Nutella, or a strawberry yogurt dip.

Serving Suggestion

To make a strawberry yogurt dip, mix 2 mashed strawberries, 4 tablespoons Greek yogurt, 1 teaspoon vanilla paste, and maple syrup to taste.

FAQs

I don’t have a melon baller or cookie cutters. Can I still make this platter?

Absolutely, just cube the fruit or cut it into similar-sized chunks. You can always shape one ‘master’ piece to cut the other fruit.

Can I use canned fruits?

Fresh fruits will look more vibrant, but if canned fruit is available, that’s fine, too.

Can I make this in advance?

Yes, shape it a few hours in advance, and keep it covered in the fridge topped with plastic wrap.
